An Accrington man spoke of his anger and issued a warning to diners after being hit with a fine for parking for more than an hour at KFC.

Ian Kenyon visited the restaurant but was hit with a £60 fine after spending 10 minutes more than the one hour limit in the Hyndburn Road car park.

While the signs do indicate that this was the designated parking time, Ian says it is not enough time – especially when with young children.

He said: “It feels unjust. There are signs around a car park, fair enough. When you go into a place looking for something to eat, you don’t look at these signs as you think it is okay.

Ian says that the service in the restaurant is quite slow, which compounded the problem.

Additionally, he says that most people assume that whilst you are on the premises, you are allowed to stay as long as you like.

He also insists that he and his family did not leave the restaurant and spent the whole time in the takeaway.

Ian added: “By the time you get him [Ian’s grandson] something to eat it is more than an hour.

“For a few minutes, £60 seems quite unfair.

“It is a lot of money, we are both pensioners, and if I don’t pay it by Thursday, it goes up to £100.

“You are given three hours at Tesco to do a shop, and you are only allowed an hour to have a meal.”

He appealed the ticket but has been told by the parking company Civil Enforcement that it was correctly issued, and the appeal was denied.

After being contacted by the Lancashire Telegraph, a KFC spokesperson said: “We’re sorry that Ian’s experience wasn’t great and we're working with the car park operator to cancel Ian's fine as a gesture of good faith.

"The car park at our Hyndburn Road restaurant is operated by an external company, and they do have some parking limits in place to help keep things running smoothly.”
