Two Lancashire students have been issued with Covid fines, had their vehicle seized and have been reported for speeding after police caught them driving to Liverpool during lockdown.

The students were spotted by police on the M62 on Sunday evening doing 88mph in lane three of the motorway.

Police attend 'hundreds' of incidents over weekend issuing numerous Covid fines

When the driver eventually slowed down, officers indicated for him to stop and pull over.

It soon became apparant that the students, from Preston, had not only been to Sheffield to pick up a mate before heading to Liverpool for 'a change of scenery', but the driver only had a provisional licence and also had two bald tyres.

The car was seized, both occupants fined, and they were told to make their way back to Preston without their vehicle.

A spokesperson for the police said: "Sometimes things just roll down hill for some people despite it being so easily avoidable.

"A couple of students from Preston were spotted going towards Liverpool on the M62, sat in lane three at 88mph.

"When the driver eventually noticed the traffic car behind him, he slowed right down, but stayed in lane three for two junctions.

"Upon stopping him, he decided the best place to stop would in the running lane - that certainly caused a panic moment.

"When safely on the hard shoulder, we then find two bald tyres, and he only has a provisional driving licence.

"He was picking his friend up from Sheffield to go to Liverpool, apparently for a change of scenery.

"Stay at home, and all of this would have been avoided - absolutely not acceptable.

"Therefore, the driver has been reported for: excess speed, inconsiderate driving, two bald tyres, driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence, no insurance (as any policy he has will now be invalid).

"His vehicle was seized for breaching covid restrictions.

"The passenger will also be reported for his breach of restrictions.

"Both of these individuals were taken off the motorway to find their way back home to Preston."
