INDEPENDENT councillor Andy Doig has thanked constituents for re-electing him in the face of a substantial SNP and Conservative vote.

The representative for Johnstone North, Kilbarchan, Howwood and Lochwinnoch is one of only two Independent councillors in Renfrewshire after he quit the SNP earlier this year.

He said it had been a “battle” to remind voters the election was about local issues.

Cllr Doig added: “I rededicate myself to the service of all my constituents. I want to put them first and fight for their interests in the chamber and in the community.

“In the light of the polarisation between the Tories and the SNP, I am very proud of my result.

“I wish to also thank my tireless election agent, Bruce McFee, and my hard-working campaign team, without whom I could not have pulled through to victory.

“Against the backdrop of a General Election being announced and issues around Brexit and a second independence referendum, it was a constant battle on the doorsteps to remind voters to keep it local.”

Cllr Doig had a 38-year association with the SNP but was deselected as a council candidate by the party.
