Aston Villa striker Ross McCormack has joined Australian side Central Coast Mariners on a season-long loan deal.

McCormack made a mark in the A-League last season when he scored 14 goals in 17 appearances in a spell with Melbourne City.

The former Leeds and Fulham frontman has not played for Villa for over a year and has scored just three goals in 20 appearances since a £12million move from the Cottagers.

McCormack could become a team-mate of former sprinter Usain Bolt, who is on trial with the Mariners and the former Scotland international told the club’s official website: “I’m really excited to get back to Australia.

“The standard of football in Australia is a bit overlooked I think – everyone wants to play football the right way and I loved my time with Melbourne. When this chance came, I knew it was the right decision for me.

“I want to come to the Central Coast and belong, I really want to be a part of something. I want to work hard and put myself in the best position to help the team. That’s what will put a smile back on my face. The happier you are in football, it’s going to bring the best out in a player.”
