Rovers player ratings from the opening day defeat to Charlton.

Christian Walton 5

Made one smart save late on with his feet, and one to deny Taylor in the first half, but didn’t seem all that convincing around his six yard box.

Elliott Bennett 4

Gave the ball away in the lead up to the first goal, one of several instances in which his passes failed to find their destination.

Darragh Lenihan 5

Caught under the ball as Taylor raced through in the second half and couldn’t get his head on Williams’ cross to prevent the first goal.

Charlie Mulgrew 4

Was his mistake which led to the first Charlton chance when misjudging a header, and almost let in Taylor with a poor touch early on.

Amari’i Bell 4

Too relaxed in possession and backed off a little too often in defence. One good ball in to the box apart, struggled to offer an attacking threat.

Lewis Travis 5

Allowed Taylor to wriggle free to turn home the winner. Had less of an influence in the second half after an encouraging opening.

Bradley Johnson 7 (MAN OF THE MATCH)

Showed some fight and has added physicality in the middle of the park. Was his header which created the equaliser. Tired a little as the game wore on, but used the ball well and by far the pick of the bunch on his Rovers debut.

Adam Armstrong 5

Started on the left, and didn’t get much change out of Dijksteel. Had a little more joy from the right before being surprisingly replaced.

Bradley Dack 5

Nothing he tried seem to come off on a frustrating day in which he closely marked by Pratley. One shot wide in the first half and another saved after the break.

Stewart Downing 6

Preferred to Rothwell and generally used the ball well. Couldn't sort his feet out to turn home in the best chance of the first half. His corner led to the equaliser, and could well have been switched to left back, rather than substituted.

Sam Gallagher 5

Toiled away in attack, but while an ever willing worker, couldn’t provide the necessary goalscoring threat. Tired as he switched to the flank.

Subs

Danny Graham (for Armstrong, 69) 5

His introduction seemed to be greeted by too many aimless balls forward. Frustratingly offside on more than one occasion.

Joe Rothwell (for Downing, 69) 5

One driving run apart after coming on, struggled to get in to the game. Was his miss-kick that led to the corner from which Charlton scored.

John Buckley (for Travis, 80) 5

Game had become too fractured by his arrival which couldn’t spark a comeback.
