Hello again. Hasn’t it been a long one this year?

The frustration has been evident with some fans getting increasingly panicked by the lack of a ‘marquee’ signing.

There is a week left of the window and it is likely that things will start to move fast when they do start.

Pre-season is hard to gauge when the opposition are of a lesser level, but the second half performance at Rangers showed great spirit.

My main concern is that the XI who started at Blackpool will start the season.

It’s obvious that Lewis Travis should be the first name on the teamsheet; he is set for a big season, but I remain unconvinced by Bradley Johnson.

Watching him closely in two games, I saw him hiding too much for my liking.

I am impressed with the formation Mowbray and the Rovers are developing, but see Charlie Mulgrew in that role once another centre-half is brought to the club.

Corry Evans is a better fit in that position than Johnson.

The player I would love to see given a run in the side is John Buckley. His desire and skill may be countered with inexperience, but he is fearless and demands the ball.

And although I wouldn’t want to overload the side with the young lads, Joe Rankin-Costello has had a tremendous pre-season and also deserves a chance to progress.

Of the new signings I still think Johnson could play a part, but not for 90 minutes.

Stewart Downing is clearly skilful and his experience will be vital in some games.

Sam Gallagher looks to have added more to his game since his last spell.

While still rusty, he could be a massive asset in the fresh formation this season.

And what of Ben Gladwin? Much like I am with my gym membership, I kind of forget he exists for months at a time until I feel a sudden twinge. Let’s hope all the lads get 100% fit and the Rovers get off to a flying start.

At 5pm on Saturday I hope our optimism is still buoyant.
