Rovers rounded off their pre-season schedule with a 2-0 win at League One side Blackpool.

Adam Armstrong continued his scoring form, his third of the close season, with a fine effort early on before Ben Brereton came off the bench to double the advantage late on.

There are still question marks over the side, with only a week to go until the opening game, particularly with still no defensive additions through the door.

But in attack, Rovers look well stocked, with the goals for both Armstrong and Brereton in the friendlies a welcome boost to their confidence.

Christian Walton was given his first Rovers outing in goal, while Stewart Downing lined up at left back with Amari’i Bell on the bench.

It was a fast start by Rovers who led inside three minutes. Armstrong, operating from the left, cut inside his marker before curling in a terrific effort in to the top corner from the edge of the box.

He was having plenty of joy down that side and teed up Graham for his first effort of the afternoon, but Michael Nottingham did well to block as did defensive partner Curtis Tilt to keep out a Bradley Dack strike.

As the Rovers fans continued to pour in, as well as the rain, Blackpool sounded a warning in the 11th minute. Sam Gallagher lost the ball on halfway, and after Darragh Lenihan and Lewis Travis collided trying to make a covering challenge, the ball was squared for Armand Gnanduillet who skied the ball over the bar when unmarked from eight yards.

Elliott Bennett was next to put his side under pressure with a loose pass across the middle of the pitch, with Lenihan having to get in the way of a Sully Kaikai shot.

Graham was looking for his first goal of pre-season and looked hungry for it. A 25th minute shot was deflected wide before his flick from an Armstrong cross didn’t have the power to trouble Jak Alwnick.

But he passed up an excellent chance on the half hour, firing wide from 10 yards after more good work from the ever-lively Armstrong.

Gallagher was also on the hunt for goals. Graham’s excellent vision sent him clear, and although he got to the ball ahead of the advancing Alnwick, the keeper managed to get a vital touch on the ball and clear the danger.

But he should have been tested moments later as Gallagher met a Bennett cross 12 yards out, only to head well over the bar.

An unchanged side appeared for the second half, with Walton forced in to his first save of the afternoon five minutes after the re-start.

Michael Nottingham was allowed to exchange passes with Jay Spearing a little too easily, and his shot looked to have wrong-footed Walton, after taking a deflection, but he readjusted himself to keep the ball out with his feet.

Rovers’ had been much quieter as an attacking unit, but substitute John Buckley couldn’t have caught his shot from Armstrong’s pass much better,  but Alnwick did well to hold with 67 minutes on the watch.

When Rovers made seven changes with 15 minutes to go, the game was drifting towards its conclusion.

But Ben Brereton would make it two goals in two games when he was on the spot to turn in from close range after Richie Smallwood’s free kick was parried in to his path.
