Scott Wharton signed a new Rovers contract and subsequently joined League Two side Northampton Town on a season-long loan.

The 21-year-old has agreed a new deal which will keep him at Ewood Park until the summer of 2022.

Wharton will now spend the 2019/20 season at Sixfields, his fifth separate loan spell away from Ewood Park.

The Salesbury-born defender finished the 2016/17 campaign with Cambridge United and after then Lincoln City for the second half of the 2017/18 season.

Wharton started last season with Lincoln, before switching loan clubs and joining Bury where he helped the Shakers to promotion to League One.

His last appearance for Rovers came in an FA Cup tie with Crewe Alexandra in November 2017 having made his debut against Burton Albion in August 2016.

Rovers have given Northampton permission for the defender to play in the League Cup and Checkatrade Trophy.
