Christian Walton has promised to be his own man, but knows comparisons with David Raya are inevitable.

Rovers moved to sign the Brighton goalkeeper on loan on Tuesday as a replacement for the Spaniard who was sold to Brentford earlier this month.

Walton had a watching brief for Wednesday’s win at Bury but should make his debut in tomorrow afternoon’s final pre-season friendly at Blackpool.

The 23-year-old has spent the last twos seasons at Wigan and is highly rated at Brighton, which is why no permanent agreement is involved in the season-long loan. He jumped at the chance to join Rovers, but admitted his long-term ambition is to become No.1 at his parent club.

“David has done well for the club but I have come here to show what I can do and help the team move forward and improve on last season and improve on different things that the manager wants to work on,” he told the Lancashire Telegraph.

“Blackburn losing David freed up a vacancy and I think the recruitment team got in touch with Brighton and it moved really quick for a loan.

“When I was told about the opportunity to join Blackburn I jumped at the chance because the club is going in the right direction and I wanted to be part of what the manager has put in place here.

“It was a quick turnaround from Brighton to get up to Blackburn but it has been really good, everyone has made me feel welcome and I am just looking forward to getting started now.”

Rovers are unbeaten in pre-season so far and will look to continue that form against the Seasiders.

This is Tony Mowbray’s final chance to assess his squad before the season gets underway next weekend.

Walton had been earmarked for possible inclusion at Bury, but instead Jayson Leutwiler and Andrew Fisher took on the goalkeeping duties.

“I was potentially going to be involved but it was quite a quick turnaround and I don’t think the manager wanted to throw me in with lads I don’t know that well,” Walton said.

“I think with a few days training I will be ready for Blackpool and I am looking forward to it.”

There will be a familiar face in the Rovers dressing room for Walton to re-acquaint himself with having come through the ranks at Plymouth Argyle with fellow summer signing Sam Gallagher.

Walton is no stranger to settling in to new surroundings though, with this his sixth loan spell and seventh different temporary club.

But he admits: “It is fairly tough but I am used to it now, the lads here seem a really good group and I think that is what the manager wants - a good squad and good people.

“It is easier with every loan, it is difficult when I was going out at 18 or 19 but I know a few of the lads here and I have played with a couple of them.”

He added: “I know Sam Gallagher really well, I was at Plymouth with him from the age of 10 to 16 so I know him really well. I think the transition has been really good.”
