Tony Mowbray says Rovers remain in the market for another goalkeeper, despite the signing of Christian Walton from Brighton.

The 23-year-old signed on a season-long loan from the Premier League club on Tuesday and is expected to be the club’s No.1.

Rovers sold David Raya to Brentford earlier this month, for an initial fee of £3m, which intensified their search for a new stopper.

Mowbray says a permanent goalkeeper could be added in this window, or in January, with the club also close to finalising a deal for Manchester City defender Tosin Adarabioyo.

However, the Rovers boss said the money generated from the sale of Raya remains untouched and could be used later in the window.

“He’s always been on our list,” Mowbray said of Walton.

“That’s what the recruitment department is about, they serve the menu up and we try and pick the right one.

“Christian was always an option for us. We explored other options as well but we believe he’s a top goalkeeper.

“We have spoken to a lot of people who believe that he will play in the Premier League if not season, the one after.

“This is just part of his development and progress. He’s a different type of goalkeeper to David, but one that will hopefully do very well for us and we’ll benefit him and he’ll benefit us.”

Asked if Rovers will add further to their goalkeeping department, Mowbray said: “We are still looking.

“Christian has come in and his club believe he is going to play in the Premier League.

“We have to accept that. He will be going back at some stage to play for them.

“We either get our own goalkeeper now in this window or let it run until the next one.

“If one comes around at the price then we are still in the market for the right goalkeeper.”

Mowbray had hinted that Raya’s departure had been done to help fund the arrival of striker Sam Gallagher and the expected loan arrival of Adarabioyo.

But when asked by the Lancashire Telegraph, Mowbray added: “I would have to say that we haven’t touched that money yet.

“As I’ve always said, if the right player comes along for this team that will cost X I will go to the owners, ask them, and I’m pretty sure they would support the team.

“At the moment I would say that David Raya fee hasn’t affected any of the incomings.”
