Charlie Adam scored twice for Rovers in a behind-closed doors game against Macclesfield this afternoon.

With several senior faces returning for tonight’s game at Mansfield, Rovers scheduled the game to get minutes to as many players as possible.

That saw a first run-out of pre-season for Ryan Nyambe, back after his commitments with Namibia in the Africa Cup of Nations and winger Harry Chapman who missed the Barrow win with a slight injury.

There was also 45 minutes for new signing Sam Gallagher who could step up his involvement when Rovers travel to Rangers on Sunday.

Adam impressed in the opening friendly win over Barrow and scored for the Under-23s in a behind closed doors win at Leeds, where he also claimed an assist in a 2-1 victory.

Jacob Butterfield, released by Derby this summer, is also still training with the club. Although he didn’t feature at Barrow, he did play at Leeds and featured in the 3-1 win over the Silkmen at Brockhall.

However, the 29-year-old, as well as Scot Adam, a free agent after leaving Stoke in the summer, aren’t thought to be under consideration for a contract.

The one concern from the game however was that Jacob Davenport, who missed much of last season through injury, was forced off just after the half hour mark and replaced by Tom White, a summer signing from Gateshead.

Rovers trailed 1-0 at half-time but rallied after the break. Adam equalised two minutes in to the second half and put Rovers ahead in the 56th minute.

Striker Joe Nuttall, who also played at Leeds last Friday having scored the winner for the senior side at Barrow on July 6, added a third in the final quarter.

Rovers: Hilton, Platt, Doyle (Nyambe 56), Wharton, Thompson, Adam, Butterfield, Davenport (White 33), Chapman (Gallagher 46), Vale (Mols 62), Nuttall
