Rovers will face Oldham Athletic in the Carabao Cup first round.

The two teams were paired with each other in Thursday night’s draw, with ties to be played in the week commencing August 12.

Rovers last faced the Latics side, relegated to League Two that same season, in their promotion campaign from League One in 2017/18.

Having lost the game 1-0 at Boundary Park, Rovers battled back from 2-0 to earn a draw in the Ewood fixture.

Tony Mowbray’s men have been handed a tough start to their Championship campaign, with the game coming their first away game of the season at Fulham and before a home date with Middlesbrough.

Meanwhile, Stanley will host Sunderland at the Wham Stadium.

The two sides will both be in League One again next season after the Black Cats were beaten in the League One play-off final by Charlton.

Sunderland won the game at the Wham Stadium in April after the initial game was postponed in the second half for a waterlogged pitch.

John Coleman’s side start the season with a trip to League Two champions Lincoln City on August 3 before hosting Bury in their second fixture.

Rovers reached round three of last season’s competition, beating Carlisle United and Lincoln in the opening two rounds before losing to Bournemouth.

Stanley meanwhile were thrashed 6-1 by Mansfield.

Premier League teams who aren’t in Europe, as well as relegated duo Fulham and Cardiff, enter the competition in round two, with the rest joining in round three.

The draw was conducted by former England internationals John Barnes and Ray Parlour in a supermarket close to Wembley Stadium.
