Jayson Leutwiler finished the season as Rovers No.1 and has earned a recall to the Canada squad for the 2019 Gold Cup.

The Rovers ‘keeper was named in the provisional squad, but hadn’t made any of the last three Canadian squads.

But the 30-year-old has got the nod for the Gold Cup having started four consecutive matches for Rovers to end the season. He extended his time at Ewood Park as the club triggered the 12-month option in the deal he signed when joining from Shrewsbury Town in the summer of 2017.

The competition runs from June 15 to July 7, with Leutwiler taking part in a training camp before travelling to the US for the tournament.

He was part of the 2017 crop which reached the quarter-finals of the competition, with Canada two-times champions.

Leutwiler’s involvement with his national team will see him miss Rovers’ pre-season trip to Austria at the back end of June, and also see him unlikely to be involved in the friendly at Barrow on June 6.

Canada played Martinique on June 15 in Pasadena, before facing Mexico on June 19 in Denver and conclude the group stages with a game against Cuba on June 23 in Charlotte.

The 16 nations are divided into four groups, the top two from each group advancing to the quarter-finals.

“We laid a good foundation culturally and tactically through Concacaf Nations League Qualifying and the team seem focused and ready to push each other and the country as far as they can in the 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup,” said head coach John Herdman.

“The tournament will be tough with the quick turnaround of games, the travel schedule and playing at altitude in Denver against a very good opponent, then to the heat and humidity of Charlotte, but this is what you want as a team to be tested and then to grow from those experiences.

“We’ve been tested in different ways through Concacaf Nations League and now we head into a tournament setting where things will move at a rapid pace. It’s going to be great to see the team come together in this moment.”
