Middlesbrough have announced that Stewart Downing will be leaving the club at the end of his contract.

Downing has been linked with Rovers, and it is understood he will meet with Tony Mowbray to discuss the possibility of a move to Ewood Park once the pair return from their respective holidays.

The winger, who turns 35 in July, is out of contract at the Riverside and the club announced in their retained list that Downing is one of four players that haven’t been offered a new deal.

He won't be short of options this summer, with Rangers and Sheffield Wednesday also linked, while a move overseas isn’t being ruled out.

Downing has a wealth of experience, including 35 England caps, having made his debut for Boro in 2002 as a 17-year-old after coming through their Academy.

He went to make his 400th appearance for the club, during his second spell, against Swansea City last month.

Downing won a 2004 league cup winners medal at Boro, as well as helping the club to the UEFA Cup final in 2006 where he was also named in the England World Cup squad.

In 2016, he helped his home-town club to promotion to the Premier League, having spent time at Sunderland, Aston Villa and Liverpool in between his two spells at the Riverside.

Boro are currently without a manager, which has complicated things for their four out-of-contract players, but the club have said the quartet are free to speak with other clubs.
