Rovers target Patrick Bauer is ready to make a decision over his future at a time when Jack Rodwell’s remains uncertain.

The club have offered Rodwell fresh terms, with the deal he signed last summer set to expire at the end of next month.

Winger Craig Conway revealed at the weekend he would be ending his five-and-a-half year association with the club, but the situation surrounding 27-year-old Rodwell is still unclear.

The former England international joined as a free agent last summer, making 22 appearances, but is weighing up his future with Rovers unable to offer any guarantees over regular football next season.

Mowbray had already identified central defence as a key area to strengthen this summer, with his options diminished by the departure of Paul Downing at the end of his contract.

The boss said Rodwell, who has also played in central midfield for Rovers, would be given time to consider his options, though Rovers ‘wouldn’t wait forever’.

Bauer, the subject of bids last summer, remains on the radar and could be one of two central defenders who arrive in this window.

But Charlton will make one more attempt to keep hold of their play-off hero.

Bauer scored the winner in Sunday’s League One play-off final as Charlton sealed their Championship return.

Addicks boss Lee Bowyer confirmed after the match they would offer a new deal to the 26-year-old in a bid to keep him at The Valley having conceded the German would be ‘100 per cent heading to the Championship’ had Charlton lost on Sunday.

Bauer could still end his three year stay with the club, even despite promotion, and is ready to discuss his future.

“I think the club will probably speak with me about the future, if they want to,” Bauer told the South London Press.

“It’s not just me, I think every player wants to play at the highest level possible.

“But now we are up, and we will speak.

“For me it would be best to do it as soon as possible, because from now until the season starts there is not a lot of time.

“It has been a difficult time here at Charlton but I’m absolutely delighted we got back to the Championship.

“I’m delighted for the management, players and especially the supporters – they deserve it. It is an absolutely amazing club.

“It is a big achievement to get such a good squad together and get promoted.

“It’s what they (the fans) deserve for all the years being supportive.”
