Charlton plan to offer Patrick Bauer a new deal to stave off interest from Rovers, and other Championship clubs.

Bauer was Charlton’s matchwinner in their Wembley final win over Sunderland, scoring in the 94th minute to secure the Addicks’ spot in the Championship next season.

Rovers saw bids for the German central defender rejected last summer, though the 26-year-old will be a free agent next month.

Charlton boss Lee Bowyer said ahead of the game that anything other than promotion would spell the end of Bauer’s three years at The Valley given Championship interest.

The former Maritimo defender, who has played 135 times in three years for the club, had previously stated he would be leaving at the end of his current deal.

But after the Wembley win, Bowyer told the South London Press: “We can go to Pat now and offer him a contract.

“We had to get up because he was 100 per cent going to the Championship.”

Rovers are keen to add to their defensive ranks having shipped 69 goals in their 46 league games.

While Bauer would be available on a free transfer should he reject Charlton’s expected offer, his wage demands are likely to be higher than Rovers would ideally want to offer.

Bauer featured 39 times for Charlton this season, saving his only goal of the campaign for the most important moment as he turned home from close range to give his side a 2-1 win.

Charlton were behind to a bizarre Naby Sarr own goal but battled back to make their Championship return.

Bowyer added: "It shows the character of the players. I've said it before we have got a unique set. They could easily have gone under after giving that goal away.

"We were really nervy but then we settled down and controlled long spells of the game.”
