He is best known for being the ‘mic’d up referee’ whose every move, and word, was followed during an Australian A-League game earlier this year.

Now, referee Jarred Gillett will make his Championship debut when Rovers host Swansea City on Sunday.

The 32-year-old has already taken charge of matches in League Two and League One last month, with his first taste of the EFL coming in Morecambe’s Easter Monday win over Cheltenham, before being the man in the middle for Fleetwood’s goalless draw with Bristol Rovers on April 27.

Gillett will join the PGMOL's Select Group 2 for the start of the 2019/20 season, but moved over last month as he is currently studying at Liverpool John Moore's University.

Gillett has been named the A-League Referee of the Year five times and is also on the FIFA list, though hasn't yet gone to a World Cup.

Speaking at the time of his appointment, Mike Riley, the PGMOL managing director, said: “He is hugely experienced and demonstrates a number of key attributes that we expect from our referees.

“He has strong and highly-effective player management skills, a strong understanding of the game, and is well respected by the players and coaches in Australia.”

He has become the first official from overseas to take charge of matches in the EFL, and he will be assisted at Ewood Park by James Wilson and Geoffrey Russell. Jeremy Simpson will be the fourth official.
