Rovers Under-23s could finish the Premier League 2 season as high as fifth after an impressive win over Liverpool.

Damien Johnson’s side ended their league campaign with three consecutive victories after seeing off the Reds at Anfield.

First half goals from Joe Rankin-Costello and Dan Butterworth proved the difference and ensure that Rovers did the double over Liverpool. The win moves them to fifth, though both Derby and Chelsea could overtake them should they win their final game.

Johnson made two changes to his starting XI, with Stefan Mols and Jack Vale returning to the side in place of Harry Chapman and Joe Nuttall.

The visitors threatened early on when Butterworth drew a save from Caoimhin Kelleher just before the 20 minute mark.

They opened the scoring from their next attack though as Rankin-Costello met a Mols cross to head in to the bottom corner.

John Buckley fired over at the end of a promising break, before the hosts had two chances in quick succession.

First, Rhian Brewster saw a strike blocked by Charley Doyle before Ben Woodburn, on loan at Sheffield United earlier in the season, curled an effort over.

Albinson then saved from Rafael Camacho before Rovers doubled their advantage six minutes before the break.

Butterworth raced on to a long ball from captain Tyler Magloire before cutting inside and bending a left foot shot across Kelleher and in to the far corner.

Connor Randall went close for the hosts just after the break, before Albinson tipped over a Camacho shot.

Liverpool did find a way past the ‘keeper with six minutes left however, as a Camacho inswinging corner wasn’t dealt with and turned home from close range.

But Rovers had enough to see the game out, and with it, seal an impressive end to the season.
