Rovers Under-23s return to Merseyside this weekend, with Damien Johnson looking for a better display from his side than their previous visit.

Johnson was left disappointed by an uncharacteristically lacklustre display from his young side who were knocked out of the Premier League Cup at Goodison Park by Everton on Tuesday.

They round off their Premier League 2 campaign against Liverpool at Anfield today (4pm) already sure of their top flight status.

Jacob Davenport and Joe Nuttall are both set to feature, though Harry Chapman won't be involved after featuring for the first team at Norwich.

“The game is at Anfield and it’s an opportunity for the lads to go and play in a fantastic arena and finish off what’s been a positive year for the group, and for a lot of individuals,” he said.

“We have to go and give a much better account of ourselves than we did against Everton in the first half.

“That will be the focus.

“There have been players that were unlucky not to play on Tuesday night and they might come in to contention.”

Jack Vale, a scorer in the league win over Manchester City earlier this month, could return in place of Chapman.

But whoever takes to the field, Johnson is expecting a response from his side who beat Manchester City at Ewood Park last time out, one of 12 wins in their last 17 matches.

“I think the first half was so out of character,” Johnson said of the Everton defeat.

“It was maybe one of those evenings when we have an off night.

“As a professional you don’t want to be having too many of them so it’s important we don’t have one against Liverpool and we have to get back to it on Sunday.”
