Joe Rankin-Costello has signed a new two-year deal at Rovers.

The talented youngster becomes the latest member of Damien Johnson's squad to put pen to paper, with his contract running to the summer of 2021.

Rankin-Costello was the most pressing deal for Rovers to sort, with the former Manchester United youngster seeing his previous contract expire this summer.

He follows the likes of Tyler Magloire, John Buckley, Daniel Butterworth, Lewis Thompson, Stefan Mols and Charley Doyle in securing an extended stay at Rovers after a terrific run of form.

After several outstanding seasons at youth level, the talented teenager was rewarded with a professional contract in January 2017, before being handed his senior debut by manager Tony Mowbray in last season's Checkatrade Trophy group game against Bury at Ewood Park.

Rankin-Costello played his part in Rovers' Premier League 2 Division 2 title success last season, before his campaign was cruelly cut short by injury.

That sidelined him for 12 months, but the attacking midfielder, who has also operated at right back, returned to action in December and has impressed in recent months - netting twice in the Premier League Cup last 16 success over Stoke City last time out.

“It feels really good, as I’ve been waiting for it since I was out injured," said Rankin-Costello.

“It’s a relief more than anything, because it’s been a tough year for me getting back fit.

“Mentally it’s been hard, but the fitness coaches have helped me get through it. Damien (Johnson) and the gaffer have been great in supporting me also.

"I missed playing with the lads and to get back out there with them was the best feeling ever.

"I feel a lot stronger and better mentally now. It’s exciting to be coming in every day, which wasn’t the case a year ago when I was injured.”
