Versatile defender Charley Doyle has become the latest Rovers youngster to extend their contract at the club.

Doyle, who was out of contract this summer, has penned a 12 month extension to his deal which will now run until 2020.

The 20-year-old, who can play anywhere across the back or as a holding midfielder, Doyle has been with the club since the age of eight and progressed through Rovers’ youth ranks.

After signing his first professional contract in June 2017, Doyle has become a mainstay of Damien Johnson’s side over the course of the last two seasons, featuring 15 times in Premier League 2, scoring twice, while also netting in the Premier League last 16 win over Stoke City.

And after signing a new deal, Doyle said: “I’m delighted.

“I’ve been here for around 10 years, so it’s good to progress through and I’m just happy to get the contract done now.

“When you’re at this level, the aim is always to work your hardest to try and push on. The aim was to become a regular with the Under-23s and then push towards the first team.

“I’ve been here since the age of eight, so I’ve spent most of my life here. I used to travel up from school and come to the Academy all the time. I’ve been at this club for a long time, so I know what it means to the fans.”

Doyle follows in the footsteps of Under-23s team-mates Stefan Mols, Dan Butterworth, Lewis Thompson and John Buckley, who have all penned new deals with the club in recent weeks.

He has trained with the first team this season, and is one of a clutch of central defenders at the club, alongside the likes of Scott Wharton, Joe Grayson and Matty Platt, who are all currently out on loan, and Under-23s captain Tyler Magloire who made his first team debut last month.

Platt, as well as full back Jack Doyle, are among the Under-23s squad who see their current deals expire this season, with Rovers already having allowed the likes of Lewis Hardcastle and Okera Simmonds to move on permanently in this calendar year.
