Adding a striker capable of providing competition to Danny Graham will be Rovers’ priority on transfer deadline day.

The window shuts at 11pm this evening with Rovers in the market for a striker ahead of the remaining 19 games of the season.

A run of four consecutive Championship victories has moved them within three points of the top six, but Tony Mowbray is hoping for an addition to add more firepower to his squad.

Graham has started 22 of Rovers' 29 Championship matches, and has been in excellent form, scoring nine goals, but Mowbray is keen to take the weight off the shoulders of the 33-year-old.

The boss has identified his top target, with interest in Southampton forward Sam Gallagher, while the club have been linked with a move for Charlie Austin and Britt Assombalonga this week.

“It’s one of his (Mowbray’s) main targets, to bring someone in to assist Danny in his role and give him an alternative,” Chief Executive Steve Waggott said.

“There is still a way to go until the end of the season and another player would add  some more depth to the squad and also show the other members of the squad that we’re still moving forward.

“We have some irons in the fire but as ever in the transfer window there are other parts of the equation that have to move for us to potentially get closer to the targets we want.

“They have to be the right player though with the cohesive nature and character of the squad and Tony is very particular on who his targets could be and they have to be the right fit.

“We're still looking, we have brought Harry Chapman in but would like to bring one more in if at all possible.”

Gallagher is a player Rovers have pursued for some time, with the 23-year-old having scored 12 goals during a previous loan spell at the club in 2016/17 and is the most likely name at the top of the list.

But his availability could well hinge on Southampton bringing in a player of their own, with the Saints not keen to leave themselves a striker short, while he does have other interest from Championship teams.

Rovers had looked at the possibility of signing Gallagher permanently last summer, but any remaining deals in this window are more likely to be a loan signing.

Waggott explained: “Unless something, because it has been quite a quiet and subdued window, there might be an acceleration of something and one might jump out of the woodwork, it’s more likely to be a loan at this stage.”

Austin was linked with a move to Rovers in the national press has fallen out of favour at Southampton. The former Burnley man has 18 months left to go on the four-and-a-half year deal he signed when joining for £4m in January 2016 from QPR.

Assombalonga meanwhile, has nine goals for Middlesbrough this year, despite playing second fiddle to Jordan Hugill at the Riverside. But both he and Austin are currently on salaries significantly higher than Rovers’ current wage structure which would hamper the possibility of any deal.

“There are a few players that are circling the market with clubs and agents putting their names out there as being available,” Waggott said of the links to Assombalonga and Austin.

“They are both quality players but they come at a price, and quite a significant price.

“If they are players that Tony is interested in then that’s something we would pursue but at the moment he has a primary target and let’s see if anything develops.”
