Ryan Nyambe is in contention for a return to the Rovers side at Newcastle United after training on Thursday.

The full back missed the defeat at Sheffield United, and New Year’s Day win over West Brom, with a hamstring injury picked up in the Boxing Day loss at Leeds United.

Elliott Bennett (foot) and Craig Conway (thigh) returned to the fold in recent weeks, but Rovers could be without both Derrick Williams and Jack Rodwell once again.

Both of Rovers’ loanees Harrison Reed (Southampton) and Kasey Palmer (Chelsea) have been granted permission to feature by their parent clubs.

“Ryan Nyambe trained after missing the last game or two,” Mowbray said ahead of the St James’ Park trip.

“Derrick Williams didn’t train today, but isn’t far away. He might train tomorrow but whether that gives him enough of an opportunity to put himself in the frame for the weekend we will wait and see.

“Generally we’re getting there. We have a few coming back who we have missed over this crucial period.

“With the intensity we ask them to play at we picked up a few knocks and niggles but they are starting to come back which is pleasing.

“Craig Conway was back on the bench the other day, Elliott Bennett was back for the last two matches, and we are filtering a few back, so have some selection issues with a squad that’s starting to look healthier.

“We’re starting to play Saturday, Saturday, Saturday through January which will give us more preparation time. It’s been difficult with two day preparation to face the top four sides in this division has been difficult and a big ask for us.

“I’m pleased we started the year with a victory and now have a huge test this Saturday.

“We will pick a team that we believe can go there and give Newcastle a tough game.”
