FAYE McCoy’s second-half winner secured a second piece of silverware of the season for Blackburn Rovers Ladies as they lifted the Lancashire Challenge Cup for an 11th time with a 1-0 win over Fylde Ladies.

The clash saw Gemma Donnelly’s FA Women’s Premier Division North champions take on the side third in the table.

But while there are 24 points between them in league standings, the two sides were evenly matched at the County Ground in Leyland.

McCoy was the first to test Fylde’s resolve when she saw a header from a corner blocked on the line in the early stages.

And that signalled the start of a decent spell for Rovers, with top scorer Saffron Jordan twice going close to adding to her 22 goals for the season before Jess Holbrook fired just over the bar from distance.

Donnelly’s side had to weather a small storm after the restart, with the Coasters looking to gain the upper hand.

But Rovers have shown all season that they are a resilient side and they forced their way back into the contest - defender Ellie Cook testing Fylde goalkeeper Danielle Brown with a header from a free-kick.

Jordan went close again when she was just off target after being teed up by Ella Toone.

But there was a scare at the the end when former Manchester United full-back Olivia Wilkes looked set to grab the opener, with Cook having to make a vital block.

The Rovers defender was having a fine game and went within a whisker of giving her side the lead when she got on the end of a Holbrook free-kick but saw her effort crash off the crossbar.

McCoy rattled the woodwork again with a 30-yard piledriver moments later as Rovers started to turn the screw.

The pressure finally told when, with just under half an hour to play, a corner was spilled by Brown and McCoy was on hand to nod the ball over the line.

Blackburn were keen to seal the win, with Jordan, Toone and substitute Emma Rankin all going close.

But while they couldn’t add to their tally, they kept the Fylde forwards at bay and the final whistle sparked scenes of celebration.
