Game A April 1, 2001, Rovers 5 Burnley 0

THIS was an East Lancashire derby to remember for the Rovers fans as they revelled in a high noon massacre that moved them a step closer to a return to the Premier League. The April Fool’s Day win also completed a double for Rovers over their rivals. This was the first time in 17 years that the two teams had been in the same league. Craig Short got the ball rolling with a 13th minute goal and then played a key part in the second as his deft flick was turned into his own net by Steve Davis. Matt Jansen added two more goals in the second half and Craig Hignett completed the rout as Rovers registered their biggest post-war win over Burnley. Game B May 1, 2001, Preston 0 Rovers 1

ROVERS confirmed promotion back to the Premier League with victory over Preston, to round off an emotional season. The campaign was just one game old when Rovers owner Jack Walker died at the age of 71, leaving the club and the town in mourning. In response to his death, captain Garry Flitcroft vowed to win promotion back to the top flight in Jack’s memory. Nine months later that vow was realised as a late goal from Matt Jansen secured the three points needed to return to the top flight. Thousands of Rovers fans sang Walker’s name as they celebrated the final act in a season of heartbreak and drama. Game C February 24, 2002, Rovers 2 Tottenham 1

ROVERS won their first major cup in 74 years as Matt Jansen and Andy Cole scored the goals on a memorable afternoon in the Millennium Stadium. Cole was the hero as his 68th-minute strike secured the victory and a complete set of club medals for the striker, who had won everything in his time at Manchester United except for the League Cup. But the hero of the day was Brad Friedel, who produced a string of fine saves to keep Spurs at bay. Rovers had initially led through Jansen, but Christian Ziege levelled. As the final whistle went there were scenes of jubilation before Garry Flitcroft and Henning Berg lifted the trophy. Game D February 1, 2006, Rovers 4 Man Utd 3

DAVID Bentley celebrated his arrival at Rovers on a permanent deal in style with a hat-trick in a thrilling win over Manchester United. It had been 14 years since any player had scored a Premier League hat-trick against United. Having previously been on loan from Arsenal, Bentley joined Rovers in a permanently 24 hours before the match. All seven goals came in a 33-minute spell either side of half time. Louis Saha cancelled out Bentley’s opener but the midfielder scored again and a Lucas Neill penalty made it 3-1 at half time. Bentley then completed his hat-trick before a Ruud van Nistelrooy double to make it a nervy final 25 minutes. Rovers: Friedel, Neill, Todd, Nelsen, Gray, Reid, Tugay (Emerton), Savage, Pedersen, Bentley (Johnson), Kuqi. Subs not used: Enckelman, Peter.

Game E October 18, 2009, Rovers 3 Burnley 2

THE fans of East Lancashire’s two footballing giants had waited 43 years for a top flight derby and for Rovers fans it was an afternoon to remember. Burnley came into the game riding high after a promising start to life in the Premier League under Owen Coyle, but their bubble was burst as Rovers came from behind to maintain their wonderful derby record. Robbie Blake’s 20-yard drive put Burnley ahead inside five minutes but David Dunn soon levelled the match and Franco di Santo then nodded Rovers ahead. Moments before half time Pascal Chimbonda made it 3-1, although Chris Eagles pulled a goal back in injury time. Rovers: Robinson, Jacobsen, Samba, Nelsen, Chimbonda (Givet), Dunn, Pedersen, Nzonzi, Andrews, Diouf (Emerton), Di Santo (Roberts). Subs not used: Brown, Salgado, Hoilett, McCarthy.
