Game A: May 10, 1992, Rovers 4 Derby 2

ROVERS came from 2-0 down to claim a vital first leg lead in their Division Two play-off semi final against Derby in 1992.

Kenny Dalglish’s side finished the season in sixth position and faced third-placed Derby for a place at Wembley.

The first leg at Ewood Park started very badly for Rovers though, as Marco Gabbiadini put Derby ahead after only two minutes.

Tommy Johnson’s 14th-minute goal then made it 2-0 but Rovers were level at half time as Scott Sellars and Mike Newell hit back.

David Speedie then scored twice after the interval to give Rovers a 4-2 first-leg lead. They lost 2-1 in the second leg, progressing 5-4 on aggregate.

Game B: May 25, 1992, Rovers 1 Leicester 0

ROVERS secured their return to the top flight for the first time in 26 years after defeating Leicester in the play-off final at Wembley.

Rovers had divided their time between the second and third tiers of English football since dropping out of Division One in 1966.

On a baking Bank Holiday Monday, 31,000 Rovers fans made the trip to Wembley as part of a crowd of 68,147.

The only goal of the game came on the stroke of half time as Steve Walsh fouled David Speedie, with Mike Newell sending Carl Muggleton the wrong way from the penalty spot.

Newell saw another penalty saved by Muggleton late in the game, but Rovers had already done enough.

Game C: April 2, 1994, Rovers 2 Manchester United 0

ALAN Shearer’s double gave Rovers real hope of beating Manchester United in the race for the Premiership title in 1993/94.

In only their second season in the top flight, Rovers had closed the gap to leaders United to only six points ahead of the clash of the top two at Ewood Park.

In an electric atmosphere, Rovers took the lead just after half time when Alan Shearer lost his marker and headed home at the back post from a Tim Sherwood cross.

Paul Ince later hit the post for the visitors, but Shearer scored an iconic second goal – racing on to Stuart Ripley pass before outmuscling Gary Pallister and smashing home.

United, though, won the title that year.

ON the 50th anniversary of VE Day, Rovers secured the victory that ultimately would be decisive in their bid to win the title in 1995.

It was a Monday night in early May and Rovers led Manchester United in the table by two points with only two games left.

Three points appeared a must, ahead of a tricky final fixture at Liverpool, and the breakthrough came on 29 minutes when Graeme Le Saux’s cross allowed Alan Shearer to rise highest and turn the ball into the net.

Tim Flowers made important saves from Peter Beardsley and Rob Lee as Kevin Keegan’s Newcastle could not find the net – keeping the title race in Rovers’ hands.

ROVERS lost the game but won the Premiership title on an unforgettable day.

Rovers led Manchester United by two points in the table and had to win to be certain of the title.

They went ahead after 20 minutes as Alan Shearer fired home Stuart Ripley’s centre. United then fell behind at West Ham, but Liverpool hit back at Anfield through John Barnes.

United soon levelled in their match and there were real nerves when Jamie Redknapp put Liverpool 2-1 in front in stoppage time.

But United could only draw and Kenny Dalglish was able to celebrate winning the league on his return to Anfield.
