MEMORIES of walking down Wembley Way are what lured readers to vote for Burnley’s last FA Cup final appearance as their ‘game of the 1960s’.

The Clarets collected runners-up medals on the day, following a 3-1 defeat to Spurs.

So it is perhaps a surprise that this game pipped the title winning win at Manchester City as fans’ favourite of the decade.

But any trip to Wembley is an occasion to savour, especially one played out by two of the era’s finest sides and in front of a crowd of 100,000. And Burnley – who had finished runners up in the league to Ipswich that season – missed out on the double but played their part in making history, with Jimmy Robson scoring the 100th FA Cup final goal at Wembley.

What makes the occasion even more poignant is that this was Burnley’s last FA Cup final appearance.

Captain Jimmy Adamson went on to be voted Footballer of the Year, with Jimmy McIlroy the runner-up.

The cup final defeat polled nearly half the votes cast.
