BURNLEY manager Eddie Howe has pulled the shutters down on any more Turf Moor exits this summer, and has revealed he wants his next signing to be a permanent one.

Chris Eagles and Tyrone Mears were set to complete a joint £3million-plus move to Bolton Wanderers last night.

In the meantime, Kieran Trippier became the second defender after Ben Mee to arrive on a season-long loan from Manchester City.

20-year-old Trippier impressed on his debut in the Clarets’ penultimate friendly at Oldham Athletic on Tuesday after being announced as a direct replacement for Mears by manager Eddie Howe.

Burnley have already allowed targetman Chris Iwelumo to join Championship rivals Watford, who they face on the opening day of the season, while Clarke Carlisle joined Preston North End on a season-long loan following Graham Alexander’s departure earlier this month.

The Clarets have continued to fend off strong interest from Portsmouth for striker Martin Paterson, who has been the subject of bids totalling at least £1.5million from the south coast club.

Following the untimely departures of Eagles and Mears, Howe is determined that his quest to build for the new season will not suffer the setback of any further exits.

“I certainly don’t want to lose any more. I certainly hope we don’t. I don’t think we will,” said the Burnley boss.

“In terms of outgoings I think that’s it.

“We’re trying to build something now and we need to get new players in and settled quickly.

“The last thing we want to do is lose any more of our key players, and I’m sure we won’t.”

His focus now is to make his first permanent summer signing.

“I've said all along I don't want too many loans, I think you can have too many,” he explained.

“Season-long loans are excellent, as we found with Jack Cork, as you have that stability, they will be with you for a period of time.

"But permanent signings are my preferred choice, although you have to find the right players - that's the difficult part.

“I wouldn’t say we’re seconds away but work is going on on a couple of players so we’ll just wait and see over the next few days.

“Hopefully there’ll be a few more (new faces). We’ve got a decent squad - you saw it on Tuesday.

"We made a few changes and there were lads with a lot of quality not playing and you still look at the team and think it’s a strong team.

“We’re okay. We just need a couple more.”

After Eagles and Mears sat out the game at Torquay last weekend, Howe confirmed that there was nothing sinister in his decision to rest players including Brian Jensen, Wade Elliott, Chris McCann, Andre Bikey, David Edgar and Jay Rodriguez.

“We looked at it and we wanted to get some 90 minutes in and a few of the lads hadn’t had that.

"The ones that had, we decided to give a rest to,” he said.

“The ones that hadn’t, we needed to get them some game time.”
