BRIAN Laws believes a change of style is a necessity for Burnley in the remaining months of the season – because the rest of the Premier League have sussed them out.

The Clarets claimed 16 points from their first 12 games following promotion, with only one side in Premier League history falling victim to relegation after such a start.

But Burnley have since taken only four points from their next 11 games and now sit second bottom of the table going into tomorrow’s home game against West Ham.

Laws took charge of the Clarets last month after Owen Coyle departed for Bolton, and the boss is concerned that other sides have now worked out how to play against them.

“Teams that come into the Premier League do find that in the early stages they have success because they’re unknown,” he said.

“It’s the second part of the season when the opposition understands you a bit more and work on your weaknesses. You get punished for it.

“You see it time and time again, teams do very well at the start and then fade.

“Hull had one of the best starts ever in the Premier League.

"They had something like 20 points after nine games and no team had been relegated with that many points at that stage but they were one off it in the end.

“I can understand where our weaknesses are and have tried to strengthen them.

“The opposition have worked it out so we have to change that and give them something different.

“If I know there’s something, then they knew the same months ago.

“Teams aren’t breaking us down as easily now, so we’re giving them more to think about.

“West Ham have already tasted Burnley this season and raced into a 5-0 lead.

“But they had weaknesses in their side and Burnley got three goals back pretty quickly.

“It will be interesting to see how they come to us because I can’t see them being as open as that.

“I think they’ll come here not wanting to get beat.”
