Premier League fixtures for the forthcoming season are released tomorrow, with Burnley having struggled on the opening day in recent seasons.

Sean Dyche acknowledged that the European adventure his squad embarked on 12 months ago, which saw their season start in July, had an effect on his players as their pre-season was cut short.

The Clarets do not have that to contend with this time around heading in to their fourth consecutive Premier League campaign which kicks off on August 11.

Last season saw Dyche’s side make the long trip down to the south coast as they faced Southampton having already played three times in the European
competition.

The game played out to a goalless draw, with Joe Hart starring on his second appearance for the Clarets after a summer switch from Manchester City.

It took Burnley until Saturday, September 22 to register their first win in a campaign that saw them avoid relegation to the Championship by six points.

The 2017/18 season saw the Clarets off to a flying start despite having been handed a daunting trip to West London to take on Antonio Conte’s defending champions Chelsea.

Dyche’s side surprised everyone as they went in at half-time with a 3-0 lead after two goals from Sam Vokes and one from Stephen Ward.

Chelsea, reduced to 10 men after Gary Cahill was sent off on 14 minutes, pulled two goals back in the second half, but Burnley were able to hold on in a game that their fans regard as one of their greatest away days in the Premier League.

It was the perfect start to an excellent season, having had to wait until April for their first away in 2016/17.

Burnley went on to a well-documented seventh place finish that season and qualified for their first European campaign in more than 50 years.

The Clarets started the 2016/17 season with two games at Turf Moor – first up was Swansea and then Jürgen Klopp’s Liverpool.

Swansea came away 1-0 winners on the opening day following a Leroy Fer goal in the 82nd minute.

Andre Gray and Sam Vokes secured a 2-0 win over the Reds in a game which saw Klopp’s side have 80 per cent of the ball.

Burnley finished 15th in that season, again avoiding relegation by six points, having won the Championship title in 2015/16.

That secured a quick return to the top-flight after the Clarets were relegated in 2014/15.

It was Chelsea to open their Premier League campaign that year as Jose Mourinho’s side rolled in to Turf Moor.

The eventual champions won 3-1 at Turf Moor, Scott Arfield gave Burnley the lead but goals from Diego Costa, Andre Schürrle and Branislav Ivanovic ensured a winning start for the visitors.

It took the Clarets until November 8 to register their first win in a tough campaign that saw them finish second-bottom.

Burnley’s first test in the Premier League was a trip to Stoke City on the opening day back in 2009/10.

It was a tough baptism to life in the top-flight as goals from Ryan Shawcross and a Stephen Jordan own goal gave the Potters victory.

The stand-out moment from the season would actually come in the first home game when four days later a Robbie Blake strike gave them a famous win over Manchester United.

Burnley ended that season in 18th, five points adrift of safety.
