BURNLEY have a fight on their hands to seal Jay Rodriguez’s return to Turf Moor.

The Clarets are once again being linked with a move for a player who left the club for Southampton in a £7 million deal seven years ago.

The 29-year-old impressed as West Brom missed out on an immediate return to the top flight last season scoring 22 goals.

While Burnley’s interest is long-standing, the Clarets having had a £16 million bid turned down last summer, other clubs are now being alerted at the cut-price deal that could be in the offering for a proven Premier League frontman.

Rodriguez is reportedly available for as little as an initial £5 million with £5 million in add ons, the deal needing to be done by the middle of July to satisfy the clause in his contract.

As many as six clubs, including the Clarets, are being credited with an interest in a player who won his only England cap against Chile in 2013.

His potential arrival could be part of a re-jigging of the frontline at Turf Moor over the summer.

Ashley Barnes and Chris Wood made the starting spots their own, both scoring 13 goals in all competitions, meaning that opportunities were limited for others.

Nahki Wells could head for the exit after spending the season on loan with Queens Park Rangers in the Championship.

The 29-year-old scored nine goals in 43 appearances for the Loftus Road club having not started a game for the Clarets since his £5 million move from Huddersfield in August 2017.

Matej Vydra’s future is a matter for debate with the former Watford and West Bromwich Albion man having made just six starts for the club since an £11 million move from Derby last August.

A move to find more first-team football next season could prove attractive.

Peter Crouch’s next move remains up in the air with the 38-year-old out of contract and having made no secret of the fact he is contemplating retirement.
