BURNLEY boss Sean Dyche was pleased with how his ‘pieced together’ side adapted to beat Barnsley 1-0 and book a place in the FA Cup fourth round.

Chris Wood’s stoppage time penalty saw the Clarets home against their stubborn League One opponents after Burnley saw a first half spot kick overturned by VAR after a lengthy delay.

Dyche made eight changes to his side from the Premier League victory over Huddersfield Town with only Dwight McNeil, again impressive, Charlie Taylor and James Tarkowski retaining their places.

The latter two played in unfamiliar positions with Taylor on the left of midfield and Tarkowski, captaining the Clarets for the first time, playing at right back.

And Dyche was pleased with his side’s performance.

“We know they (Barnsley) are a decent side,” he said. “We had to piece together a side. We lost players with injury and Robbie Brady with suspension.

“Most of our team have played four games on the trot. We felt over 95 minutes we would have enough.

“That side has never played together before. We haven’t had Tarky right back for starters, and we had to move Charlie Taylor up one.

“They didn’t have a shot on target. The group as a whole are getting that tightness back. We had three or four great chances, didn’t take them, but chances we carved out.”

Steven Defour and Stephen Ward both returned to side following injury, as did goalkeeper Nick Pope, but Matt Lowton and Phil Bardsley missed out through injury although both are expected to be fit for the clash with Fulham next weekend.

“We had to find not only the balance of rest and recuperation but also the players coming back,” Dyche said of his team selection.

“I’m pleased with Wardy and Steven, it was a risk and reward scenario.

“We had no choice but to change the right-back. (Lowton) has a real bad bang on his toe and (Bardsley) has a minor strain. We had to piece together a side that won the game.”
