BURNLEY tried to break their transfer record for a third time during the transfer window, chairman Mike Garlick has revealed.

The Clarets twice broke their record in signing Belgian midfielder Steven Defour from Anderlecht and Jeff Hendrick from Derby County.

While the deadline day deal for Hendrick was undisclosed, Garlick has denied that the figure quoted of over £10million is accurate.

He also said that a deal that would have seen the transfer record broken for a third time fell through due to the player opting to go elsewhere.

“We broke our transfer record twice in two weeks with Defour and Hendrick, and while some media outlets seem to think the latter was £10.5m, I can categorically state this is not the case," said Garlick.

"We were also happy to do it a third time for a Dutch player who, in the end, opted to go elsewhere."

Burnley had targeted Dutch-born midfielder Hakim Ziyech, of FC Twente, during the transfer window, but the 23-year-old eventually stayed in the Eredivisie and moved to Ajax for a fee of €11million on August 30.
