A POINT won or two points lost? I’m still not sure.

From being in a losing position, in the end, we were actually left wondering how we hadn’t won. It was one of those games!

Last weekend’s win at Stoke City eased the pressure on us to beat Aston Villa.

But having hit the post through goalscorer Danny Ings and then seen a Lukas Jutkiewicz header fly just wide, I can’t quite believe we didn’t pick up all three points.

Villa looked very neat and may have caused us more problems had they possessed anything close to an end product.

Joe Cole – remember him? – was superb for the hour or so he was on the field and it was his sliding effort that put the visitors ahead seven minutes before the break.

It was probably no less than Villa deserved having crafted some very nice openings and then restricting the space we had going forward.

After the break we found a little bit more zip without really looking like scoring until Michael Kightly latched onto an Ings flick and weaved his way towards goal before poking a shot at Brad Guzan.

Boss Sean Dyche made changes not long after and it was sub Jutkiewicz who won the penalty which led to the equaliser, ref Graham Scott have no other option once Jores Okore buddle over the former Middlesbrough man.

Ings, fresh from scoring two last week at the Britannia, made no mistake from 12 yards out, smashing the spot kick high past Guzan. We poured forward looking for the winner and had Villa on the ropes.

Ings saw the chance of a second crash back off the post. was so unlucky not to add a second, his shot was hit well enough but came crashing back off the post. He looked absolutely gutted at the end, led on the edge of the penalty area as the full-time whistle went, and that shows exactly what this means to the lads.

I think a point was probably a fair result in the end because we weren’t at our best. Plus it keeps our mini-run going.

Newcastle are next up, and will be smarting from defeat to West Ham.

But with a couple of injury worries – Tim Krul and Daryl Janmaat the latest casualties – and captain Moussa Sissoko missing through suspension it could be a good time to play them.
