ACCRINGTON Stanley avoided an FA Cup upset at non-league Guiseley but will need a replay to book their place in round two of the competition.

The Reds drew 0-0 with the National League side at Nethermoor Park after an encounter that brought plenty of chances but ultimately no goals.

A strong Reds side arrived in West Yorkshire with the one change seeing captain Seamus Conneely restored to the line up after injury.

And John Coleman’s side started well after initial frustration when Kayden Jackson looked to be in only for referee Antony Goggins to pull the play back for a free kick before Stanley crafted a fine opening chance.

Mark Hughes headed a Sean McConville free kick across the face of goal to Jackson, who from inside the area fired over the top of the cross bar when well placed.

Further Stanley openings followed with home goalkeeper Jonathan Maxted tipping a McConville strike into the side netting and Jackson seeing a shot blocked.

But as the half wore on the hosts, who are 20th in the top tier of non-league football, applied the pressure and soon the Reds had keeper Aaron Chapman to thank for keeping them level.

First he turned a header from striker Mike Fondop round the post before pushing out another header from midfielder Jake Lawlor.

And the giant keeper had to be on his mettle again moments later when Kevan Hurst’s shot from the edge of the box looked set to loop over him, only for Chapman to back pedal and turn it over the bar.

Coleman’s team started the second half with good purpose but Chapman soon had to deny the lively Fondop again.

Stanley did start to exert pressure thereafter and were only denied an opening goal by the woodwork. Jordan Clark’s low right wing cross was deflected towards his own goal by a defender and Maxted clawed the ball out only for it to ricochet off the bar and be cleared.

That close call set the home fans a little on edge and brought the best spell of the game for the visitors but they were unable to find a way through.

Kee had two close calls as he looked to give the League Two side the lead, first chesting down a Janoi Donacien throw and producing a fine overhead kick the flew narrowly wide before reacting quickest to a Donacien cross from the right and from around eight yards out smashing the ball over Maxted’s bar.

Stoppage time brought a spell of pressure that saw Paul Cox’s home side dreaming of a late winner but Chapman had other ideas.

Fondop dug out a shot from the edge of the box but the Stanley keeper managed to get down to his right and turn the ball behind for a corner which his team successfully defended.

The final whistle brought relief for the Stanley players and their supporters and they’ll get another chance at the Wham Stadium on Tuesday week to see off the Lions.
