Chorley boss Steve Waywell took huge encouragement from Sunday’s 3-2 home defeat to a Bolton Wanderers XI, ahead of the new Unibond Division One North season tomorrow.

Waywell’s side fell 3-0 behind, but Mark Rogers and Terry Fearns reduced the deficit with goals in the final ten minutes, and manager Waywell was delighted with how well his team matched up to Premier League opposition.

“There were lot of of positives against a quality side,” said Waywell.

“They had six or seven first-teamers out, and their back four all had Premier League experience, so to only lose 3-2 was hugely positive,” he added.

Waywell admitted his side could have been better on a couple of fronts, and is looking to put them right ahead of the season's opener at home to Wakefield.

“Our passing wasn’t as bright as usual,” he added.

“But the organisation and work rate were good.”

Just under 1,000 fans showed for the fixture and the Magpies gave their fans a sound indicator that this season could be one to remember.

“We start with Wakefield on Saturday. They’re a strong, physical team, so we need to win that battle first.

"We’ve got more ability than them, better strikers and midfielders.

"We’re confident but not over-confident,” he added.
