CHORLEY boss Garry Flitcroft has swooped to complete the signing of highly-rated goalkeeper Sam Ashton as he looks to strengthen his Magpies.

Ashton arrives at Victory Park from Skelmersdale United after an impressive season where he helped Skem to the Evo-Stik League First Division North title.

And Flitcroft has made the move after Chorley’s current number one Jack Cudworth was linked with a move to a club in a higher league after his impressive 2012/13 campaign. The two will compete for the Victory Park keeper’s jersey next season.

Before joining Skelmersdale two years ago he had previously played for FC United where he made close to 200 appearances, netting once from his own area.

He started his career at Bolton Wanderers and has also had brief spell at Southport.

The 26-year-old said: “Chorley are a massive club in non-league football with so much potential and Garry sold it to me by saying he wants to win the league.

“The Northern Premier isn’t one I’ve won yet so it would be great to do that with the Magpies.

“I’m excited to start the season and meet my new team-mates as I’ve heard great things about them.”

Flitcroft is delighted with his business and said: “Sam is a goalkeeper who I’ve had my eye on for a while.

“He’s had good experience at Bolton Wanderers and FC United.

“He’s recently been at Skem and picked up an award for being the best keeper so for him to join us is a massive catch.

“There was interest from another club in Jack Cudworth so felt we had to strengthen that department.

“A goalkeeper is a real important position in a football team and now we’ve got two good ones.

“It will be interesting to see them fighting for the number one spot.”
