* The Joe Salt New Year’s Day Awakener Race takes place on the first day of 2012 from Red Lion Inn in The Square, Whitworth.

The race will start at 11.15am and takes place on a 4.2-mile multi-terrain course including paths, trails and the Cowm Reservoir area.

* Entries are now full for the Auld Lang Syne Fell Race that takes place this Saturday from Penistone Hill, near Haworth.

The six-mile event, with 900m of climb, begins at 11.30am.

* The 3rd annual Central Lancashire New Year Half Marathon takes place on Monday, January 3.

This race is a fast and flat lap around the rural village of Catforth, near Preston.

It starts at 10am from Catforth Village Hall.

All finishers recieve a commemorative medal and goodies on completion.

Entries on the day if avaliable, with £14 fee on the day.

* The Lancashire Athletic Association’s Cross Country Championships will be held at Blackburn’s Witton Park on Saturday, January 7.

Athletes must be aged eight or over with junior races starting at 11am.

The final event of the day, the over 40s race, is at 2pm.

Entries are expected to be available up until race day, costing £4 for under 17s and £6 for others.
