BLACKBURN Harriers duo Holly Bleasdale and Sophie Hitchon have booked their places at this month’s World Championships in South Korea after winning their events at the UK Trials at the weekend.

The teenage duo had been on course to qualify for their first ever World Championships for much of this year after impressive form, with both breaking British records.

Bleasdale, 19, jumped higher than any teenager in the history of the women’s pole vault last month and won the UK trials event in Birmingham yesterday with a height of 4.56m, defeating former British record holder Kate Dennison by 16 centimetres.

That saw the Euxton athlete confirm her place in the World Championships, which start in Daegu on August 27, because she had already reached the A standard required.

She is now expected to be an outside contender for a medal in South Korea.

Hitchon won gold in the hammer at last year’s World Junior Championships and claimed victory in her trials event on Saturday with a throw of 67.59m.

The 20-year-old from Burnley had also previously met the A standard for the World Championships and will join Bleasdale in Daegu.
