IT has been a momentous 2010 for Blackburn Harriers with possibly their most successful year ever set against a backdrop of the club’s centenary.

By then, the Harriers could boast their first ever World Champion, Sophie Hitchon, who won the women’s hammer at the World Junior Championships in Canada.

At home, their seniors won the First Division of the North of England Track and Field Championships for the third successive year while the juniors, not to be outdone, became the English Junior Club Fell Running Champions.

There were national titles for track and field captains Sarah Henton and Claude Peter-Thomas, Henton becoming the English Champion in the discus and Peter-Thomas winning the British Masters Decathlon Championships, while on the fells Elizabeth Greenwood and Beckie Taylor were English Champions in the U12 and U18 age bands and Elizabeth added the English Schools’ Championship.

Seven of their stars received international calls during the year and two of them, Hitchon and Holly Bleasdale are the proud owners of U20 British Records, Hitchon with 66.01m in the hammer and Bleasdale with 4.35m in the pole vault.
