Six East Lancashire athletes have been chosen in the 30 strong Lancashire Schools Team for the English Schools Championships at Gateshead on July 7 and 8.

The selectors have invited all the local athletes who satisfied the entry standard at the Lancashire Schools Championships.

Three girls are selected in a single event, the intermediate 800m, including Alison Leonard of Chorley and Blackburn's Leigh Lennon.

Pendle's Amy Weaver, who won the silver medal 12 months ago, has the chance to go one better in the senior girl's shot, but she will be our only thrower as Abigail Ewart from Burnley is unavailable despite her selection in the senior girl's hammer.

Our two winners in last week's North of England Under 20 Championships Eleanor Markendale and Danielle Walker are both included, Hyndburn's Eleanor in the intermediate girls long jump and Danielle from Burnley in the senior 1500m.

Danielle was the only one chosen after failing to make the standard at Lancashire Schools, but did win on the day, and subsequently set a personal best in the Northerns.

Hyndburn's Joe Basquill is the sole boy from our area and will go in the junior 800m.

The first group of selections has been made for the Lancashire Team to take part in the Northern Inter Counties Match at Gateshead on July 30.

Brian Craig is asking athletes to confirm their availability as soon as possible, and to let him know if transport is required so that arrangements can be put in place.

Blackburn Harriers' new recruit Roman Stankiewics earns his first representative honour in the under 15 boys 400m after impressing in the Lancashire Schools Championships.
