The weather indicated that the summer had started, but on the warmest day of the year, the Northern Track and Field came to a finish.

Hyndburn Athletic Club staged the final Division 4WC match of the year at a glorious Wilson's Playing Fields and the hosts produced 11 A' string winners.

The women relied on three of their stars to produce the bulk of their points - Caroline Smithson, Lauren Grime and Nicola Breaks - with Breaks alone claiming four in the 100m hurdles, javelin, triple and high jumps.

The men, with more strength in depth, actually scored more points, although Stephen Sumner in the 200m and long jump and Andrew Mitchell in the pole vault were their only winners.

Phil Mitchell returned to the Chorley Athletic Club squad in the same match and was an immediate success with victories in the shot and javelin, and missed out in the high jump only on countback.

Josh Metters took the triple jump, and Emma Booth and Emma Perrin - in the 200m and 800m - won for the women.

Hyndburn were third of the six clubs on the day with Chorley fourth, and they will finish in the same positions over the league season.

l Success for Blackburn Harriers will mean that their season will stretch into September.

The club has won all four of its matches this year in Division 2WC, but there is no automatic promotion on offer.

With four second divisions feeding just one first division in the pyramid, there is a play-off match still to come with Blackburn and Preston the qualifiers from Div 2WC.

The combined Burnley and Pendle team were last in all four fixtures to slide out of the division just 12 months after their elevation, but at least in 16-year old Sophie Hitchon they have one of the country's brightest prospects.

The UK U17 record holder in the hammer reached a distance of 52.10m, yet could only finish second to a record 56.12m from Melissa Myerscough.
