BURNLEY Under-23s made it two wins in three games after a 1-0 success at Charlton Athletic.

Tom Heaton was in goal for the Clarets, making his third appearance on the comeback trail from a dislocated shoulder, but he had little to do as Michael Duff’s side dominated proceedings at the Addicks’ Sparrows Lane training ground.

Trialist Moise Kroma, who is set to be released by Leeds United, came close to scoring early on for the visitors but he was denied by Ashley Maynard-Brewer, who then denied Tinashe Chakwana.

Burnley’s Dwight McNeil twice went close before the break, putting efforts wide from crosses from Ali Koiki and Arsenal trialist Josh Benson.

It was the Clarets who were continuing to create chances after half-time. McNeil forced Maynard-Brewer to tip his drive wide and from the resulting corner Oliver Younger headed Rahis Nabi’s delivery over.

Scott Wilson then headed against the post for the Clarets as Duff’s side sought to turn up the pressure and they rewarded in the final 15 minutes.

This time a Nabi corner flew into the back of the net, possibly via a deflection, with Maynard-Brewer under pressure in the six-yard box.

The Clarets remain bottom of the Professional Development League north group but they have closed to within six points of Barnsley.

Duff’s side are in action against Sheffield Wednesday this Friday.
