LEON Best will undergo scans on a knee injury today – but Rovers are bracing themselves for having to find another two new strikers for the Championship kick off.

Rovers boss Steve Kean was already in the market for one more forward before the season began but, if Best is ruled out for any significant period, he will be allowed to move quickly for a replacement.

The £3million summer signing from Newcastle was stretchered off in the first half of Rovers’ 2-1 pre-season friendly win against AEK Athens at Fleetwood yesterday, after an innocuous looking tackle.

Fears were growing last night that injury could potentially be serious and Rovers are now facing an anxious wait for the prognosis.

Kean is understood to have had West Bromwich Albion striker Simon Cox on his wish list, with a fee of £2m believed to have been agreed in principle with the Baggies.

The Rovers boss still remains eager to sign Cox and hopes the striker can arrive for talks in the next few days.

But the Lancashire Telegraph understands that other members of the club’s hierarchy are not ready to give the deal the green light, believing there may be better options elsewhere, so the interest in Cox is currently unlikely to be pursued.

Best scored a sublime first half goal before being stretchered off yesterday, with fellow summer signing Nuno Gomes heading home an early opener.

Rovers assistant manager Eric Black, said: “Leon will have scans in the morning so we should know in the afternoon about the extent of the injury, so fingers crossed it is not too serious.

“It is hard to say. Obviously he got a bit of a fright because his knee seems to have moved. It is very hard to tell because there is not an awful lot of swelling in the joint but the only way to tell is a scan.

“He brings a lot, we know that. He is obviously a fabulous finisher, as you saw, but he is a focus. He holds the ball, links the play and is a massive physical threat as well.

“Fingers crossed he will be okay.”

Morten Gamst Pedersen, Martin Olsson, Simon Vukcevic and Mark Bunn all remain out of action as they continue their come backs from injury.

Rovers play two games in Holland next weekend before their final league warm up game in Cork the following Sunday.
