CHURCH’S Lancashire Cup adventure lasted just one game as they were soundly beaten by Bolton League side Westhoughton on Saturday.
The West Enders, led by Levi Wolfenden for the day, seemed to be on course for glory when they reduced the home side to 15-4 at the St George’s Oval.
But Ian Pilkington’s 47 and 31 extras helped Westhoughton up to 145 all out with Sam Holt and Muhammed Jamil both claiming three wickets, while wicketkeeper Sam Tucker snared four victims.
Church’s reply was little short of a disaster as wickets tumbled from the off. They were reduced to 31-7 with only Tucker and Holt offering any resistance.
Tucker made 20 – he only made 31 runs during the 2011 Lancashire League season – while Holt made 16 but they were the only two batsmen to reach double figures as Church collapsed to 60 all out.
There was controversy at Thorneyholme Road as Accrington’s first round tie with Gujarat was abandoned without a bowl being bowled. Both sides were there – but neither umpire turned up and the game will now take place next Saturday.
There was also frustration for Ramsbottom and Lowerhouse as the Ron Singleton Colne Trophy match was hit by the weather.
The game was abandoned without a ball being bowled with conditons at Acre Bottom deemed unfit.
