WHO? Burnley-born Hitchon, 20, of Blackburn Harriers, is a former ballet dancer and trampolinist who only started to take the hammer seriously in 2007. The former Hameldon Community College student is a full-time athlete at Loughborough University.

IN THE GB TEAM? She should earn selection after smashing her own UK record last weekend with a stunning throw of 70.40m. An automatic pick is guaranteed if she twice clears the ‘A’ standard of 71.50m this year. Hitchon’s record throw at Loughborough took her to fifth in the world rankings, within touching distance of the planet’s elite.

MEDAL? Although still early in the season, Hitchon’s progression is excellent and the world’s best will have one eye over their shoulder if she qualifies. Reaching the hammer final will be the main aim, though, for the current world junior champion.
