Burnley striker Andy Gray insists he is more interested in team glory than his own personal achievements.

The Clarets sharpshooter is setting the Championship alight with five goals in his last five matches.

Norwich felt the full force of the Scottish striker on Sunday as Gray's two-goal blitz helped Burnley to a thumping 4-1 win at Carrow Road and move them third in the table.

It was the third successive match that Gray, a £750,000 summer purchase from Sunderland, hit the scoresheet following single goal strikes over Stoke and Southampton.

The 28-year-old took his campaign tally to six following his East Anglian double, thereby closing the gap on Southampton's Grzegorz Rasiak and Norwich's Robert Earnshaw, the Championship's leading marksmen with eight.

While the former Sheffield United star aims to stay near the top of the scoring charts, he modestly admits Burnley's league position carries greater importance.

"I hope I can stay up there, it would be nice," said Gray.

"But it's just as nice for Burnley to stay up there. Now we are up there, it's important we stay there.

"It could have been seven goals for me. But I'm always happy to score and I will just keep going. I'm pretty level-headed. It will be at the end of the season when I assess it."

If Gray maintains his rich vein of form, there is every possibility that Scotland boss Walter Smith may hand the Harrogate-born striker an international recall.

His one and only Scotland cap came against Lithuania in April 2003 but, for the time being, the thought of representing his country again does not bother Gray.

He added: "It's not something that concerns me at all. I'm just concentrating on playing for Burnley and getting results.

"You never know, but it's not something in the forefront of my mind. I'm 28 now and maybe he (Smith) can bring younger players in. It does not really bother me."

Clarets manager Steve Cotterill insists Gifton Noel-Williams' return to the starting line-up has eased the burden on Gray's shoulders.

And Gray admits his partnership with Noel-Williams is bearing fruits.

He added: "It's working quite well and the results have been coming.

"The two of us have been scoring goals and we are winning matches. That is all you can ask for."

After 10 games, Burnley are looking up at only two sides, Championship leaders Cardiff and second-placed Birmingham.

But with five points separating Birmingham and Coventry in 15th place, Gray admits the league is evenly contested.

Gray said: "You only have to look at the table to see there's nothing in it.

"Before the (Norwich) game, we were in 11th, so it shows how tight it is. You can move up and down the table quite quickly."
