BURNLEY are optimistic of concluding a deal for Ben Mee within the next couple of days – but Wolves have hinted that Sam Vokes’ loan stay at Turf Moor may not be extended.

The Clarets converted Kieran Trippier’s loan from Manchester City into a permanent deal last week for a fee of around £400,000 and have been holding talks to complete a similar move for fellow City defender Mee.

Burnley chief executive Lee Hoos met Mee’s agent on Monday to discuss personal terms and it is understood that the talks were encouraging, with the player happy to sign for the Clarets after enjoying his time at Turf Moor since joining on loan in the summer.

The club are hopeful that the transfer could be concluded before the end of the week.

“We've been in discussions with Ben and his agent, and hopefully we're not far away,” said manager Eddie Howe.

“I feel he would be a terrific addition to the squad. He has got better and better since he came here.”

Howe has also been in talks with Wolves over the possibility of extending Vokes’ loan spell, which expires after Saturday’s Championship fixture at Middlesbrough.

But Wolves boss Mick McCarthy has been quoted as saying that there is ‘a fair bit of interest’ in the striker, with Brighton thought to be among the clubs keen to take Vokes on loan.

Burnley have been pleased with Vokes’ contribution since he arrived on loan in November but the Welsh international has had to be content with a substitute’s role in recent games following the return to fitness of Martin Paterson and Charlie Austin.

The Clarets have not been ruling out the possibility of extending Vokes’ loan but they are set to welcome back another forward, Danny Ings, from injury in the next few weeks and finances could also be a factor.

McCarthy will be keen to see Vokes get game time and the forward will return to Molineux next week before his future is decided.

“We’ll make a decision when he comes back,” said the Wolves boss.

Wolves currently only have three strikers on their books - Kevin Doyle, Sylvan Ebanks-Blake and former Claret Steven Fletcher - with McCarthy previously suggesting there was a possibility that Vokes could return to conten-tion with the Premier League club for the rest of the season.

The striker was refused permission to play in Burnley’s FA Cup third round clash at Norwich on Saturday because McCarthy did not want him to be cup tied.

But Wolves have also been linked with Stoke striker Kenwyne Jones and Bristol City’s Nicky Maynard in recent days, and any arrival could possibly force Vokes’ exit - on loan at least - to create a space in the club’s 25-man squad for the second half of the season.

Burnley have been linked with an interest in Sheffield United midfielder Nick Montgomery but it is understood he is not a target.

The Clarets look set to hand an extended trial to promising 20-year-old winger Marvin Johnson, from Evo-Stik First Division South side Romulus.
