FORMER England goalkeeper Chris Woods always looks back at his time at Burnley with affection.

It was at Turf Moor that Woods called time on a superb 22-year playing career, making 14 league and cup appearances in the relegation-threatened 1997/98 campaign.

In the old Division Two, the Clarets were expected to challenge for promotion under player-manager Chris Waddle.

But it failed to materialise that way - and only a series of good results at the back end of the season maintained their status "We found ourselves in a situation where if he had not picked up enough points they would have ended up being relegated," said Woods.

"I was just pleased to play my part in keeping them up.

"I went to Burnley to start on the coaching side of things. Obviously, I was cover for Marlon Beresford first and foremost, but my main aim was as goalkeeping coach.

"Fortunately for me, they ended up selling Marlon and I played about the last dozen games or so, which I enjoyed.

"They were good times. Burnley is a really good club and I thoroughly enjoyed it there. The people there were really good to me and the support Burnley has is tremendous."

During a glittering playing career, he starred for Glasgow Rangers, Sheffield Wednesday and Norwich City, whom Burnley face in the Championship this Sunday, while winning 43 England caps.

Woods is now the goalkeeping coach at Everton, fine-tuning the reflexes of top stoppers Tim Howard and Richard Wright, and the 47-year-old is enjoying the role.

He added: "It's something I've wanted to do for a long time. It's nice to work with goalkeepers, just to give them a little bit of advice from the experience I've got.

"I feel in general that all goalkeepers enjoy working with coaches.

"It's the way the game has gone. I've been fortunate to be in a position to talk to someone to get through certain things.

"It's someone you can relate to rather than going to the manager."

Holding a soft spot for both sides, Woods admits he will be interested in Sunday's Norwich-Burnley clash.

"I look at results for teams I played for. I do it for them all, Rangers and Sheffield Wednesday," he explained.

"Norwich was a great place to play.

"I had five really good seasons at Norwich, they were thoroughly enjoyable."

Brian Jensen will don the gloves for the Clarets at Carrow Road, while Danny Coyne awaits his return to the first-team fold after recovering from a serious cruciate knee ligament injury sustained 12 months ago.

Assessing Burnley's two goalkeepers, Woods said: "I've seen a lot of Brian and Danny and they are both steady goalkeepers, although I don't know Brian as much as Danny.

"My brother (Jim) knows Danny from when he was a physio at Grimsby.

"Touch wood, I've never had an injury quite as bad as that.

"But the main thing is to make sure you are fully ready before playing again, making sure everything is 100 percent."
