FORMER Clarets boss Stan Ternent has denied an alleged "serious and unprovoked" assault at Burnley Cricket Club.

Ternent, 60, pleaded not guilty to assaulting Greg Wilson causing him actual bodily harm on August 6 when he appeared before Burnley magistrates yesterday.

The defendant, of Cliviger, was charged in his full name, Francis Stanley Ternent.

He spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth and address. A charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm was put to him and he elected to be tried at Crown Court.

He was given unconditional bail until November 22 for committal proceedings.

The court was told the prosecution allege Ternent followed and head-butted Mr Wilson at the club and was said to have subjected him to a serious and unprovoked assault.

Burnley Cricket Club, who play in the Lancashire League, had been playing Nelson in the Worsley Cup final at their Belvedere Road ground when the alleged incident took place.

Ternent became Burnley FC boss in 1998 and spent six years at the club.

He led the club to promotion from League Two into the Championship, narrowly missing out on the play-offs to the Premier League two years in a row.

His tenure at the club ended in 2004 with an emotional final game against Sunderland, the club he supported as a boy.
